How Can Goal Setting and NLP Help You Quit Smoking?

If you're reading this page right now, I know something about you. You or someone you know is at least considering how to quit smoking. That's great!

To quit, the first thing you must do is set a goal to be done with smoking.

Then structure your language so that you're focused on what you want. Instead of becoming a non-smoker, you could call yourself a fresh-air-breather. Yes, it sounds kind of silly at first. Remember that you always want to focus on what you want....exactly what you want. This will help your mind lead your body in what you're accomplishing...quitting smoking and breathing only fresh, clean air.

Smoking is a habit that's partly chemical and mostly just habit. After 24 hours of not smoking, the chemical need is gone from your body. That means once you eliminate the mental need or habit, you don't need to smoke any more.

Let's look at the mental need. Just notice, when do you smoke? After breakfast, in your car, on a break from work, when you're stressed, after dinner? When you drink? When you're with your friends? Do you just want something to do with your hands?

Try this exercise: carry a pad of paper with you for 1 day and write down what you're doing each time you feel like having a smoke. Make a complete list. Then look back on it and notice the patterns. What do you link smoking with the most?

Then ask yourself, "Why did I start smoking?" 99% of the time you will have one of two answers.

1. You wanted to be just like someone you admired: your parents or an older sibling

2. You wanted to fit in and be cool.

Isn't it funny that the very thing that people do to fit in can end up separating you from your family and friends? At parties, work and now even at many restaurants, you have to go outside by yourself or with a couple of others every few minutes to smoke. Kind of makes you more lonely, huh?

Does smoking really make you cool? Do you want to identify with those same people you looked up to any more? Probably not! The decision to start smoking probably happened long before you actually had your first smoke. That decision was instantaneous. The decision to quit can be just as quick and easy.

Your unconscious mind unconscious mind needs to get that message. It's ok to remind yourself of that from time to time. You can do this on a conscious level with affirmations affirmations but it's much easier to do in the more relaxed state of meditation.

The Tobacco Conspiracy Why You Have Not Been Able to Quit Smoking by Rick Saruna

What if I told you that stopping smoking was easy? That smoking is a body and mind addiction. Yes, body AND mind!

I don’t know anyone that actually picks up a cigarette and goes, “ mmmmm, tastes great!” Do you? Of course not. Your body rejects it. It coughs, hacks, spits, and does everything that it can to tell you this is bad stuff. You started because your mind was thinking how cool you will be, how much older it will make you look and your body is obeyed. Now you are addicted.

Everyone starts this way. EVERYONE. You had to use your mind to convince your body or you would reject it.

I find it fascinating that almost all methods of quitting smoking do not take into consideration the mind. There are pills and patches and inhalers and gums. All these programs have a very low success rate.

Doesn’t it make sense to use the very part of you that started the whole thing - Your mind?? Or course it does.

Everyone starts to smoke for some sort of motivating reason. If I gave you a piece of food that was stinky, burned your throat and made you cough and gag, how many pieces would you eat? I don’t think very many. See, it would be unnatural for you to want more.

Smoking is not natural or everyone would be smoking. You cannot grow a cigarette tree in your backyard or a cigarette plant in your garden. They are not natural. Tobacco may be natural but cigarettes are far more than tobacco with an estimated 4000 ingredients added! The list is highly guarded and protected by law as a trade secret. Imagine that. It’s the public’s health and it’s a trade secret. Something isn’t right.

But one thing that is right is the decision to quit smoking. Quitting smoking is the one thing that will immediately improve your life and the life of those around you. When a person realizes that quitting IS a Body and Mind process it makes the process much easier.
